It official, The Fifth Season won “Best Chili in Port Jeff” in the first annual Chili Crawl during Heart Warming Winterfest last weekend. Sponsored by EDC and Port Jeff Chamber of Commerce, participants signed up for the chili crawl at a table set up at the The Harbor Square Mall. $5 bought you a mug, little tasting cups, a spoon,a list of the participating restaurants, some tickets to give to the restaurants , and a ballot to vote for the best chili. By the time I arrived the early afternoon, they had sold over a hundred cups. I have to admit I didn’t make it to all the restaurants but I did make it to five before I was full! It was fun walking around the village and meeting other crawlers and comparing notes. Apparently some folks were aware a cold beer between restaurants was the perfect way to cleanse the palate.
All the restaurants did a a great job getting into the festive spirit and coming up with their special recipes. To be honest I didn’t make it to all the restaurants. Between the chili and cleansing of the palate, I came up with a simple one word descriptive crtitque for each restaurant. Village Way- Meaty, Tommy’s Place- Beaney, Steamroom- Claimey, Billie’s- Beerey, Fifth Season- Gourmet-ey.
Congratulations go to The Fifth Season. They really did have a great chili. They also really captured the spirit of the Chili Crawl and the Winterfest. If you have been to the Fifth Season you know they are passionate about food, presentation and the ingredients that make up their seasonal menus. As they were explaining the all the different ingredients in their chili, I asked if chili was on their winter menu. The women paused and with a big smile said no, they were just having some fun and joining in the Village festivities!
Port Jefferson really is a great place to live, work and visit!
