Poverty Rising in Port Jefferson Schools

Port Jefferson is a Village of diverse people and cultures. Sadly with all this our town is not immune to the blight of the current economy. According to numbers just released by the US Census Bureau poverty levels are on the rise in Port Jefferson Schools. Poverty level according to the national average is a family of four with an income off less than $21,954. Prior to the current census Port Jefferson Schools had 35 children living at a poverty level in 2007. In 2008 they had 41. The current info shows 45 children at poverty level or 3.5% rate. Port Jefferson schools are still well below average for Suffolk County at 7.0%. The rate for New York State is a whopping 18.8%. Port Jefferson School promised that no child is excluded from any activity because of any economic situation. At this time only 1% of the school population is enrolled in the free lunch program. The Mayor of Port Jefferson, Margot Garant stated “I am concerned that the number is increasing” As always tough times bring out the best in people. The Welcome Inn food network in Port Jeff has been helping feed people in need. Welcome Inn serves an aprox.250 meals a week according to volunteer Barbara Curtis. Port Jefferson Village has also helped The Welcome Inn with food and donations. Local churches in town have provided soup kitchens and clotihng for families in need. It warms the heart in this season of giving to see our harbor side village is so willing to help those less blessed than us..
