Better known as the B.I.D. around Port Jeff, the Port Jeff Business Improvement District keeps a low profile in the village. But if you look around you will see the is a postive force in Port Jeff Village.
Port Jefferson Business Improvement District was founded in 1998 pursuant to Article 19-A of the General Municipal Law of the State of New York. The B.I.D. Board of Directors oversees and implements an annual budget of approximately $30,000. The funds are raised through tax assessments from the over 300 members of the district.
In 2011 The B.I.D was busy. They focused on Village maintenance, beautification -appearance issues and Village events. So how do they spend their budget? In 2011 , the B.I.D spent $5000. for cleanup, landscaping and planting in Uptown and sponsored the annual Village wide Earth Day cleanup. The B.I.D partnered with the Village in a 5 year commitment in the newly installed Big Belly Solar Powered Trash compactors which can be seen all around the PJ Village. The B.I.D also budgeted $10,00 to assist in snow removal from the sidewalks of the Village business district not in front of a local business. The B.I.D also was a co sponsor of the American Music Festival and the Mayor’s Economic Development Committee’s - PJ Walking Guide as well as sponsored the Brookhaven Lot Out of Town Motorcycle Parking experimental reimbursement program.
It appears 2012 will be a busy year for the B.I.D besides other ungoing projects, the B.ID. will commit $3,000 to continue the experimental, out of town motorcycle parking reimbursement to the Brookhaven parking lot which is designed to ease motorcycle parking on Main St. The B.ID. will also be a cosponser of a $40,000 Village wide marketing and advertising campaign using TV, Radio and Print Ads designed to promote the Village of Port Jefferson.
Would like to attend an upcoming B.I.D meeting and see what they are planning in the coming months?. They meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm in the Village Center.
