The Mustang Roll Out: In the spring of 1964, the very first Mustangs arrived in dealerships throughout the USA. The car was featured at all auto shows, and appeared simultaneously on the covers of Time and Newsweek magazines. In a savvy move, 100 were donated to news reporters throughout the entire nation, and front page advertising  space was purchased ahead of time in more than 2,600 publications. In addition, the Mustang became the official pace car for the Indianapolis 500, and was even displayed at the World’s Fair in New York City.

The Result: All of the intense preparations paid off dramatically for Ford Motor Company. For example, more than 22,000 Mustangs sold the first day alone! This equalled the total sales figure for all of the Edsels sold in the US since 1958!! In addition, more than 100,000 Mustangs were sold in less than four months, with more than a half million finding their way into homes all over the US by the end of 1964. All told, by 1969, an astonishing 3.8 million Mustangs were in driveways clear across America.
