Super Bowl at the Village Way Restaurant has become a tradition for the many of the Way’s regular customers. The cast of characters change from year to year but Alice and Chris go all out with a family style free buffet for their Super Bowl customers. The NFL guaranteed the entertainment this year with two great teams playing for the title. The Giants & Patriots didn’t disappoint! The Giant’s ass first,”Butt Down” was one the first crowd pleasers of the night. Everyone knows the two feet in bounds rule. After seeing the Giants perfectly executed ” Butt Down” I guess next year, the NFL training camps will be spending a lot more time on the ass first, butt down technique. It really does give new meaning to the end zone
Of course I was rooting for the Giants but to be honest I had ulterior motives to be at The Way. Number 1 reason was the half time buffet and I may have also had certain monetary interests in the game. But the opening safety turned my 7 & 0 into a sure loser. Not to worry, Roseanne kept the Guinness flowing and Alice made sure there was plenty of cheese, crackers and cold cuts to hold us over till 1/2 time feast.
Alice started bringing the food out in towards the end of the 2nd quarter. Wow what a half time food fest – denfinte crowd pleaser~all home made including Alices’ special stuffed cabbage and Swedish style meatballs, her mothers polish pierogi and Johnny B’s italian hot sausage and meat balls. Moustapha, the Village Way Chef did his popular wings, potato skins, mussels as well as 3 foot hero’s and salads. There were even delicious deserts including The Cosmo Lady’s, authentic Jewish koogle , a French cheese cake made by Carly G (PJMC) , cakes and cookies. I didn’t even see Madonna , I was to busy eating. Left overs where taken home by customers and the rest donated to Port Jeff’s Hope Ministry, a local shelter.
Back to the game- things were looking good till the New England flexed some muscle in the third. Enter a new character at the Village Way, Roberto. He is visting from Italy. I ran into him earlier in the day at Eat Piada when he greeted me with a friendly ” Buon Giorno”. I invited him to stop by the Village Way and see what the Super Bowl is all about. I probably mentioned something about lots of beer and food. Roberto turned out to be a quick study because late in the 3rd quarter, Roberto said things are not looking good for the Giants. I told him that if the Giants have contol of the ball late in the 4th, Manning would win the game. He was impressed when the Giants pulled it out but when Brady threw the hail mary into the crowded end zone, everybody stopped, waited and watched – just one catch from changing history. The game seeemed to go into slow motion… and finally the referee signals incomplete- Giants Win! The Village way went crazy -Reberto turned to me and said ” This football is exciting game” Great game it was and thanks to Alice and Chris, The Village Way was a great place to watch Super Bowl XLVI.

Sooo true..cast of unusual regulars and not-so regulars.Great food, beer, people and game. Thanks Alice and Chris..
