Fran Zak has just published a charming book about Port Jefferson where she has lived for over 35 years. Her “Portrait of a Village” is told through the eyes of of an artist who has captured in pictures and words the everyday people, activities, places, history and events which make up her 2011 portrait of Port Jefferson.
Fran Zak taught in the English Department at Stony Brook University for over eighteen years. She is also well known in the area for her batiks, illuminated documents in English and Hebrew, and paintings. Her award-winning artwork has been widely shown in galleries and fairs. Her websiteincludes her paintings of Deia Mallorca, Spain, and the neighboring area, where Fran has spent several summers, and also her paintings of local scenes, in and around Port Jefferson and Three Village Area. My suggestion, buy her book and enjoy her website for free till the book arrives. The book is very enjoyable on many levels, I appreciated her narrative interpretations while enjoying the photos and learned that Chandler Square was named after the ship chandlers who dealt in the special supplies and equipment for ships! Who knew?
