The Town of Brookhaven has just completed a parking lot improvement project in it’s parking Lot in Port Jefferson. According to Mr Mark Brosnan, the Project manager for Brookhaven improvement project, the area which is set aside for motorcycle parking had a couple of upgrades specifically designed with motorcycle parking in mind. Before the improvements whenever there was a heavy rain the motorcycle area would flood and was not unusable for days. This spring before the lot was paved the motorcycle area was dug up and storm drains installed with special motorcycle side stand friendly covers. Last night it rained for hours but this morning the motorcycle parking area was bone dry.
Besides the storm drains, the motorcycle area was changed slightly and 3 more motorcycle spaces have been created. The space has become more biker friendly with 3 park style benches and this season BID (Business Improvement District) provide two picnic tables for the bikers convenience . Wow Brookhaven residents get free parking, benches and a two picnic table! Not bad considering the way it was a couple of years ago !
According to Mr Brosnan, Brookhaven is looking into a ways to provide night time lighting in the motorcycle area. One idea is to attach an additional street light to an existing pole near the area. This would be great for security for the motorcycles, bikers and others accessing the lot from the W Broadway entrances.
Motorcycle parking is free for Town of Brookhaven residents. Non residents pay $10 which is half of what non residents pay when they park there car.
